Guidelines for Contributors

Editorial policy 

The Journal accepts and publishes research articles based on original research, review articles, briefings, and debates.  Submissions should be relevant to the South African sociological community.

Submissions should be in English, and be original contributions not under consideration for any other publication. Research and review articles must be preceded by an abstract. All submissions should be accompanied by a separate cover page with the title of the article, the author's(s') name(s), and e-mail address(es), and the name, phone numbers, and postal address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed and an abstract.

Authors bear full responsibility for the factual correctness of their submissions. 

Presentation of manuscripts 


Research and review articles should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words.


Briefings should be shorter papers based on research, related to a topical issue(s) or report recent findings that may shape academic debate. Briefings should be between 1,500 and 3,000 words.


Debate contributions should take a position on a controversial topic, either responding to a previous piece, inviting response, or opening a new debate. Contributions should be no more than 3,000 words.

Presentation of Proposals for Special Issues/Foci:

Proposals for Special Issues/Foci should include:

-           Title of the proposed Special Issue/Foci

-           Name(s) of possible guest editor(s)

-           Motivation for the Special Issue/Foci

-           List of possible contributing author(s), or indicate whether papers will be solicited via open call

-           Biograph(ies) of possible guest editor(s)
